What is an energy community?
An energy community comprises the local actors in housing associations, detached house neighbourhood, municipalities, small businesses, and shops who join together in a community to supply renewable energy to the local community. If you want to know more about energy communities, see the energy handbook, which you can find on this page. EBO Consult has been involved in preparing the handbook to promote energy communities.

Energy Community Avedøre A.M.B.A.
The Energy Community Avedøre A.M.B.A was founded on 18 August 2020. The founders are from the local area Avedøre in Hvidovre Municipality. The founders are Hvidovre Municipality, Hvidovre Gymnasium, Avedøre Landsbylaug, Avedøre District Heating A.M.B.A., Filmbyen and EBO Consult. The energy community will cover an area of approx. 2 km2, approx. 6,000 citizens, a number of institutions and companies.
From Store Hus to Solhus
Store Hus (“Large house”) is an example of how a consumer-owned utility company, Avedøre District Heating A.M.B.A, and the tenants in a residential area can join forces to create a positive and sustained environmental change. Together, the parties managed to establish 60 solar panels on the roof of Solhuset with an area of about 750 m2, and 160 polycrystalline solar cell panels on the south facade of the house. The solar panels supply approximately 350 MWh per year, corresponding to the consumption of 75-100% of hot water during the period April-September to Solhuset’s 454 flats. Solar panels produce approximately 21,000 kWh of electricity per year. The idea of implementing the vision “from Store Hus to Solhuset” is the brainchild of the former Vice-chairman of Avedøre district heating company, Steen Jørgensen, in collaboration with the district heating company’s administrator, EBO Consult.
Middelgrunden’s windmill guild
The 20 iconic offshore wind turbines just off Copenhagen are the result of a collaboration between utility companies and private citizens. 10 of the turbines are owned by private citizens who have joined together in a guild to finance the offshore wind turbines. Erik Christiansen, CEO, is chairman of the guild and has been involved from the start of the project.
Copenhagen Solar Cell Guild
Copenhagen Solar Cell Guild is Denmark’s first solar cell association, which allows private citizens to buy a share in a solar cell plant, thus contributing to a greener environment. There was a strong demand for the shares when they were put on sale, and all the shares were sold in a few months.
The guild was founded in 2005, and EBO Consult was included from the beginning. The guild is still running today with solar cells on the library in Njalsgade and Vigerslev Substation.
Hvidovre Windmill Guild
The guild was founded in November 2007, when a group of local wind turbine enthusiasts from, among others, Middelgrunden’s Wind Turbine guild and EBO Consult set up an offshore wind farm outside Hvidovre. 10,700 shares were offered, and there was broad support for the project from local citizens and actors. After two years, the turbines could be inaugurated, and today they are a landmark for Hvidovre, with many visitors from Denmark and abroad interested in wind turbines.
Samsø Havvind (Samsoe Offshore Wind)
EBO Consult has been engaged in the establishment of the 10 offshore wind turbines south of the island of Samsø. We have been responsible for the overall coordination and management of the organisation of the many stakeholders, the dissemination of all essential information on the project process to the monitoring group and the provision of secretarial services in relation to the follow-up group. The turbines have helped make Samsø CO2-neutral.
